How Time Has Changed!!

As each generation passes through their own time they will have a different perspective on the way life was during that time and most will likely think the time frame they were destined to live in, was the best... I am no different. I grew up in a small town on the coast of Mississippi and as a child, I alternated between being a tomboy and then pretended I was a movie star. I swung from ropes, jumped water filled ditches, played Cowboys versus "Injuns" as we called them and fought in pretend wars as a real war was going on in the country. I easily switched my role, donned a sarong and stuck a flower in my hair. I was a child and played as a child.

I attended a Catholic elementary and high school where the nuns taught me skills that I would use in the work force. I learned about the sanctity of all life, marriage and raising a family. Each Spring in high school, the junior and senior girls were allowed to " stop traffic" during Hospitality Month. We set up a refreshment stand on Live Oak Street that took you to the old Hwy. 90 when one crossed over the bridge. So many tourists passing through would accept our invitation and pull over to talk with us. We made jokes about one another's accents.

Time passed and I entered the adult world, and slowly I began to realize that I am in a minority class ... a woman, a Catholic and a Mississippian whose state and several others split from the union and fought a Civil War. It's not known by many that we were fighting for a Constitutional right not a black and white issue... the media is biased! We have taken and still are the "butt" of many slurs. Most recently, Senator Hilliary Clinton's statement was similar to Congressman Charlie Rangel's statement about who wants to live in Mississippi. Arkansas should be insulted too! Of course, they both apologized but the "barb" will remain.

The wildfires in California are horrific and it was said that Katrina was responsible for the quick action taken to shelter the people. That is a good thing but I wish it had happened in Mississippi and Louisiana. I will be closely following the aftermath of this tragedy to see if the people are told they can't rebuild in such a dangerous area. They are looking for an arsonist to blame the fires on although the Santa Ana winds blow every year resulting in fires.

I still believe it is not the people of America who are biased against Mississippi ... the volunteers that have come to help us are still helping us rebuild homes. They are the "Heart of America" like the people I stopped as a young girl to welcome them to Mississippi.

Well, maybe I should tell you that I am fine after writing an earlier post suggesting that I might have Lymphoma. After a doctor's visit and a detailed blood test .. I am okay. I will take more pics as soon as I can. The weather is certainly pretty now and hopefully it will last. Of course, I will be watching the New Orleans Saints as they take on the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. See ya soon!

Yayyy!! The New Orleans Saints defeated the Atlanta Falcons today 22-16. Two of my grandsons came to my house to watch the game with me and " raised the roof" with their cheering. I think I was cheering louder than them saying, "Yay they won, they won, they won"!!! Great and exciting game. Geaux Saints!!

I haven't been writing much these days as I am tired again.. the dreaded thyroid problem. I can contract most any disease with this immune disorder and ironically the most prevalent one is Lymphoma .. like my late husband had. He lived 9 yrs. with the disease fighting everyday for his life. Unfortunately, I am much older than he was and don't think I have that much energy left to fight as he did. I think I exhausted myself fighting it with him. BUT I am still hopeful that none of the things mentioned will occur. I have a doctor's appointment Monday.

Have I told you lately that it is still not quite normal in our areas? There is still so much to do to get rid of the "hurricane just hit" look. For instance, we have torn up streets and that is bad but what makes it worse is the city needs to neatly trim the grass back from the curbs. That would make a big difference in appearance. Pascagoula is paving many streets but many won't be touched until 2010, if then. What I have noticed is when I think an original house that withstood Katrina is repaired because people are living in it, I find sheetrock and woodwork the next week piled in front of their houses. That means they have been living in a damaged home for over two years doesn't it? Will it ever end for the people? Tired as I am, I drove around today looking for pics. I found nothing that you haven't already seen. Maybe tomorrow!

Mississippi Gulf Coast: Two Years After
By now, most of you already know that the New Orleans Saints defeated the Seattle Seahawks at a score of 28 to 17. Yes I did watch the entire game and didn't get my hopes up for a victory until they actually won. Great time for the Saints and their fans!!

Sunday, October 14, 2007

I have decided that my watching the New Orleans Saints play the Seattle Seahawks tonight at 7:15PM will be determined by the "flip of a coin". Four straight losses can dampen enthusiasm. In the area I live in many people get together to watch the game... I sometimes go to my daughter's. When I returned to my neighborhood after the Carolina Panthers beat them, all the cars were departing very slowly as if they were in a funeral procession. I knew exactly how they felt. Just maybe .. this will be the turning point.

I was at a soccer game today as two of my grandsons, George and William play. Because of their ages they are on different teams. William's game was in Pascagoula, George was in Lucedale, MS.

Let's get serious guys = William #9

William's team won but those George County boys ran all over George's team. Indulge me please!

The past two days have been very pretty weather wise, especially in the mornings. So I can now say we have experienced a bit of Fall. The falling leaves have had nothing to do with the time of year .. it gets so hot down here that they fall prematurely. A perfect Fall day to me is when the temp never gets out of the 70 degree range.

There has been news that the government may buy-out 17,000 coast homes and the beaches will be virtually for condos and casinos. In 1992, the casinos were on the water. Most citizens had opposed casinos coming in but come in they did. Somehow since they weren't inland it seemed to lessen their impact on the community. After Katrina when they threatened to not rebuild unless they could build inland, they got a foothold and it seems there are casinos everywhere. Sure, they employ thousands of people but what about people who don't want to serve drinks or empty ashtrays? What happens to local businesses that need employees? Most importantly, if the above buy out occurs, where can the people go? Why do people who have not lived here all their lives find it so easy to tell us to just move on? Governor Barbour voiced his dismay that we didn't move into the central and northern part of Mississippi. Our roots are coastal... mine certainly are. Yesterday I took a couple of pics.. the first one is another Katrina cottage on the beach side of Martin Street. They are very small and narrow, almost like a playhouse I would have liked as a child. I have heard it said that the only way to get a bed into the bedroom is to have been able to drop it in before the roof was put on. As of yet, there has been no immediate solution. Time is being wasted!

Arts and Crafts

This is the second year that "Cruisin' the Coast" has now proudly cruised right on into Pascagoula showing off their vintage cars. I have a pic below of a red 1957 Chevy.. I bought my 57 Chevy when it was new .. mine was two tone blue. The hardtop was one step above my sedan but "What the heck"! Had I known then that I was driving what was to be a classic, I would still have it. I don't know what the people who have revamped these cars feel when they are driving but I remember what I felt. "Batman" comes to mind. How about those tail fins!!

Well today I did something that I said I wouldn't do .. I watched the New Orlean's Saints fourth game of the season as they played the Carolina Panthers. They lost 13 to 16 but they played real football today. The game was exciting to watch. Geaux Saints!

Yes, we are still rebuilding.
